Along for the Ride: Introducing Episode #2 of These Roads We Share

We’re proud to share the second video in our documentary series, These Roads We Share, which highlights how ICAM-supported projects across the country are expanding access to transportation through innovation, coordination, and community partnership.

This episode takes us to rural Missouri, where HealthTran is transforming what it means to get to a medical appointment - and, in many cases, what it means to stay healthy. In communities where long distances, limited transit options, and aging populations make travel difficult, HealthTran connects individuals to healthcare through a coordinated network of volunteer drivers who provide reliable, compassionate transportation to clinics, hospitals, and specialty providers. What looks simple on the surface - matching a patient with a driver - is actually a powerful, community-driven model that brings together health systems, transportation providers, local organizations and compassionate volunteers across more than a third of the state.

The impact is clear: fewer missed appointments, improved health outcomes, and the ability for people to age in place with dignity. And the program doesn’t just change life for riders; it’s deeply meaningful for the volunteers who make it possible. Many describe the work as a way to give back, live out their values, and support neighbors who would otherwise go without care. For them, each ride is a chance to make a difference in someone’s life.

This episode reflects a theme that runs throughout These Roads We Share: the power of coordination. When health providers, transportation agencies, community organizations and members of the community work together, they create solutions no single agency could build alone - solutions that strengthen communities and honor the real people behind every ride.
