These Roads We Share: Regional Mobility in Ohio

The next story in our These Roads We Share series highlights a remarkable coordination effort in southeast Ohio, where three transit agencies have partnered to improve mobility across four counties. Coordination is a driving force behind the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Innovative Coordinated Access & Mobility (ICAM) Pilot Program, and this project shows just how powerful collaboration can be in helping people get where they need and want to go.

This episode follows the people who coordinate Mobility Ohio, a collaborative transportation network serving  Coshocton, Guernsey, Muskingum and Tuscarawas counties. Together the partners created a Regional Transportation Resource Center, a one-stop hub for trip scheduling and mobility management. Three transit agencies - Coshocton Public Transit (CPT), South East Area Transit (SEAT),  and Access Tusc Transit - work together to provide seamless service across county lines, ensuring riders receive the best possible support no matter where they live.

The project brings together public transit and mobility management to provide a combination of direct rides and case management. Technology plays a key role, enabling agencies to schedule and share trips efficiently across over 40 transportation providers.  Included in this project was the development of DRIVES technology, a tool to help Mobility Ohio automate compliance requirements assisting in the oversight of all transportation providers and drivers. But the work goes far beyond logistics. Mobility Ohio staff understand that transportation is more than “wheels turning on vehicles.” They look holistically at mobility needs - wheelchairs, ramps, walkers and other supports - to ensure every rider has a safe and accessible trip.

Medical appointments are a particularly important destination for many riders. Mobility Ohio works closely with healthcare partners to ensure people can get to their appointments when they need to - and that medical providers understand how essential transportation is to accessing care.

By working across agencies and communities, Mobility Ohio has transformed coordination into meaningful care. Their work offers a powerful example of how collaboration, community leadership, and a willingness to rethink old boundaries can expand access to transportation in ways that truly change lives.
