These Roads We Share: Building Connection Through Community in the Pacific Northwest
Author: Jane Mahoney
Date: May 6, 2026
The next episode of These Roads We Share takes us to the Pacific Northwest and highlights the work of Hopelink, a community-based organization that supports the region by providing essential services like food, housing, and financial assistance, with mobility woven throughout its mission. With a 50+ year history, Hopelink understand that ensuring people can reach the places that support their well-being starts with meaningful engagement - often in multiple languages and in the spaces where people already gather.
In partnership with the King County Mobility Coalition, Hopelink has been developing Find a Ride, a one-call, one-click resource designed to make transportation options easier to understand and navigate. The first phase of this work brought dozens of services into a single platform — from major transit routes to smaller, community-based programs that are often harder to find.
Support from the Federal Transit Administration’s Innovative Coordinated Access and Mobility (ICAM) program is helping to move this work forward into Phase 2, strengthening the platform and expanding its reach. Today, Find a Ride is already helping residents, service providers, and emergency professionals identify transportation options more quickly and confidently.
What sets this project apart is the commitment to listen to those who will most benefit from the project. Community members shaped the design, priorities, and functionality of Find a Ride, ensuring the tool reflects real needs and lived experiences. Their input guided decisions about what information to include, how to present it, and what barriers needed to be addressed.
At its core, this effort is about connection - not just between destinations, but between people. Hopelink’s ongoing engagement ensures the system continues to evolve with the community it serves. It is a reminder that building a more connected transportation network takes time, trust, and a shared commitment to listening.
Across the Pacific Northwest, this work reflects a shared belief that mobility improves when communities help shape the solutions. And as Find a Ride continues to grow, it reinforces a simple truth: every journey is part of something larger, along these roads we share.
